Day 6 - Reiko
On to more exciting things for today’s journey. First stop today, the home of Mr.Taylor Branch. Mr. Branch was a personal diarist for President Bill Clinton, and he is also a guru about the civil rights movement as well. In fact, he is one of the leading experts in the area of civil rights. He spoke of the secret meetings that he had with the former President and the many book he has written about them. He also went into detail about specific movements within the civil rights era. It was very welcoming to be in Mr.Branch’s house with him sharing his wisdom. The next stop was not so pleasant. We met with Mr. Micheal Casserly of the Greater Council of City Schools. The statistics they shared concerned the achievement gap specifically with African American males in public schools. Even though I am an African American female these statistics shocked and disturbed me greatly. As a public school student myself, I am faced with these statistics everyday and it really breaks my heart. Good thing for Cultural Leadership, right? lol.
